Summary

In a ventilation-controlled fire, the air flowing in through the opening limits the burning inside the room; surplus fuel gases leave through the top of the opening and burn outside. Based on Walton and Thomas (2002), pp. 3-172 and 3-174.

Original vector illustration for Ventilation-controlled fire, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Walton and Thomas (2002), p. 3-172 (unburned fuel leaves the compartment and may burn outside) and p. 3-174 (air inflow 0.5 A0 √H0 for fires near or after flashover, interface near the floor); Van Rossum (2027), §4.11 (flames out of openings).
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a burning room: air flows in at the bottom of the doorway, fuel-rich hot gases flow out at the top and burn outside.
