Summary

A turbulent fire plume: steady lower flame, intermittent upper flame, vortices shed from the base, and air entrained across a convoluted boundary. Based on Heskestad (2002), pp. 2-1–2-2, and Van Rossum (2027), §5.3.

Original illustration for Turbulence, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Heskestad (2002), p. 2-1 (Figure 2-1.1, features of a turbulent fire plume; convoluted boundary; redraw, do not copy) and p. 2-2 (steady and intermittent flame, vortex structures); Van Rossum (2027), §5.3 (entrainment by turbulence; plume wider, cooler, more diluted)
  • Alt text: Side view of a fire with a steady lower flame, flickering flame tips, vortices and a widening plume drawing in air from the sides.
