Summary

Failure events in NIST's model of a long-span floor truss under assumed temperatures: the catenary stage starts at 565 °C, connection failures follow up to walk-off at 730 °C. Based on Zarghamee, Bolourchi, et al. (2005), pp. xxxviii–xxxix.

Original illustration for Tensile membrane action, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Zarghamee, Bolourchi, et al. (2005), pp. xxxviii–xxxix (truss model C32T1 of Floor 96, WTC 1, assumed temperature history), p. 81 (failure sequence, tension of about 12 kip at about 600 °C, caveat)
  • Alt text: Timeline from 0 to 750 °C with failure events of a floor truss model, catenary action at 565 °C and walk-off at 730 °C.
