Fse-tensile-membrane-action-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 9 KB)

Summary

A floor strip before and after it loses its bending capacity: in the catenary stage the load is carried by tension T, which pulls inward on the supports. Based on Zarghamee, Kitane, et al. (2005), pp. 310–311.

Original illustration for Tensile membrane action, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Zarghamee, Kitane, et al. (2005), p. 310 (definition of catenary action, residual moment, pull-in forces) and p. 311 (Figure 5–2: redraw, do not copy); Gross and McAllister (2005), p. 296
  • Alt text: Two sketches of a floor strip: above, a slightly bent beam; below, a deeply sagging strip with tension arrows along it and inward pulls at both supports.
