Summary

Smoke from a fire below the neutral plane is drawn into the shafts by the normal stack effect and spreads onto floors above the neutral plane. Based on Klote (2002), p. 4-276.

Original vector illustration for Stack effect, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Klote (2002), p. 4-276 (smoke movement with fire below the neutral plane; floors below relatively smoke free if inter-floor leakage negligible)
  • Alt text: Section of a tall building: fire on a low floor, smoke entering a shaft, rising and spreading onto the upper floors above the neutral plane.
