Summary
Schematic heat release rate of a fire that starts by smouldering. It either stays below about 5 kW and dies out, or turns to flaming, after which the growth phase begins. Based on National Research Council of Canada et al. (2005), p. 1.2-29, and Australian Building Codes Board (2020a), Data Sheet B1, p. 9.

- Source basis: National Research Council of Canada et al. (2005), p. 1.2-29 (smouldering fire may or may not develop into flaming; schematic smouldering design fire, max HRR typically below 5 kW; Figure 1.2.11.3a, redraw, do not copy); Australian Building Codes Board (2020a), Data Sheet B1, pp. 8–9 (incipient smouldering stage, Figure 1 design fire stages, redraw, do not copy); Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2013), p. 53 (growth phase starts when flame radiation governs the burning rate)
- Alt text: Heat release rate against time: a long low smouldering plateau that either decays or jumps at the transition to a steeply growing flaming curve.
