Summary

Leakage paths through a smoke barrier: gaps around the door, holes around penetrating pipes and cracks at the wall-floor joint. Smoke moves through them because of the pressure difference across the barrier. Based on Klote (2002), pp. 4-276 to 4-278.

Original vector illustration for Smoke barrier, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Klote (2002), p. 4-276 (buoyancy pressure above the neutral plane, 13 Pa at 1.52 m for 800 °C), pp. 4-277 to 4-278 (leakage paths: pipe holes, wall-floor cracks, door cracks)
  • Alt text: Section through a wall between a smoke-filled room and a corridor, with small arrows of smoke through door gaps, a pipe hole and the wall-floor joint.
