Summary

Layer burning (rollover) in an underventilated room fire: fuel-rich gases in the hot layer burn where they meet fresh air, at the layer interface and outside the doorway. Based on Gottuk and Lattimer (2002), p. 2-55.

Original vector illustration for Rollover, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Gottuk and Lattimer (2002), p. 2-55 (two-layer system, layer burning at the interface, external burning, Figure 2-5.1c; redraw, do not copy); Walton and Thomas (2002), p. 3-172 (unburned fuel leaves the room and may burn outside).
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a burning room: a deep fuel-rich smoke layer with flames along its lower boundary and flames outside the door.
