Summary

Cross-section of a beam heated on three sides. The char depth βt and the zero-strength layer δ are removed from each exposed face; the effective section keeps room-temperature properties. Based on White (2002), pp. 4-260 and 4-266 to 4-267.

Original illustration for Reduced cross-section method, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: White (2002), p. 4-260 (char has virtually no load-bearing capacity, char base about 300 °C, rounded corners), p. 4-266 (Equation 27 and Figure 4-11.6, three- and four-sided exposure: redraw, do not copy), p. 4-267 (zero-strength layer added to char depth)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a timber beam heated on both sides and the bottom, showing the char layer, a 7 mm zero-strength layer and the smaller effective section.
