Summary

Prescriptive design (left) is checked by comparing the drawings with the rules; performance-based design (right) by analysing a trial design against agreed criteria. Based on Australian Building Codes Board (2020b), pp. 12–13 and Van Rossum (2027), §1 and §2.1.

Original vector illustration for Prescriptive design, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Australian Building Codes Board (2020b), p. 12 (DTS route generally with a simpler assessment process) and p. 13 (DTS Solution follows a set recipe; Performance Solution addresses the performance requirements); Van Rossum (2027), §1 (rule-based versus risk-based) and §2.1 (rule-based design easier for authorities to check)
  • Alt text: Two panels: left, drawings checked against a rule book with a tick; right, objectives, analysis and criteria in a loop.
