Summary

A pool fire: heat fed back from the flame evaporates the liquid, the vapour burns above the pool, and the flame radiates heat to its surroundings. Based on Van Rossum (2027), §4.1 and §4.3, and Beyler (2002a), pp. 3-270 and 3-277.

  • Source basis: Van Rossum (2027), §4.1 (liquid must evaporate before it burns) and §4.3 (heat returned to the fuel for pyrolysis or evaporation); Iqbal and Salley (2004), pp. 3-5 to 3-6 (pool fire definition, dikes and curbing); Beyler (2002a), p. 3-270 (flame height, emission by soot, water vapour, carbon dioxide) and p. 3-277 (black smoke obscuring the flame in large pools)
  • Alt text: A burning liquid pool in a bund: vapour rises, a tall flame with smoke burns above, arrows show heat back to the pool and radiation to a target.
