Summary
In a closed room, burning about 1 kg of fuel lowers the oxygen to about 10 per cent and the fire dies down; with an open door, inflowing air sustains the fire. Based on Purser (2002), p. 2-155, and Van Rossum (2027), §4.8.

- Alt text: Two room cross-sections: a closed room with a small dying fire and oxygen at 10 per cent; an open room with air flowing in low and smoke flowing out high.
