Fse-optical-density-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 7 KB)

Summary

The two logarithm conventions describe the same transmission but use different coefficients. Based on Mulholland (2002), p. 2-263.

Original illustration for Optical density, level 3 Advanced.

  • Source basis: Mulholland (2002), p. 2-263, equations 7–9.
  • Alt text: A light beam crosses smoke; natural-log extinction and base-ten optical density are related by ln(10).
  • Accuracy notes: Keep DL dimensionless; do not label optical density a mass concentration.
