Fse-flame-extinction-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 8 KB)

Summary

As cooling or dilution removes more heat, the flame temperature falls; below a limit of about 1,600 K the flame can no longer sustain itself. Based on Drysdale (2002), p. 1-97 and Mawhinney and Back (2002), p. 4-313.

Original illustration for Flame extinction, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Drysdale (2002), p. 1-97 (limit when heat losses exceed heat production; 1,600 ± 100 K); Mawhinney and Back (2002), p. 4-313 (limiting adiabatic flame temperature about 1,600 K; no need to cool to ambient)
  • Alt text: Sketch of flame temperature falling as more heat is removed; the flame goes out where the line crosses a dashed limit at about 1,600 K.
