Summary

A finite element mesh for a quarter of an insulated steel column: nodes joined into elements, with smaller elements where the temperature gradient is steepest. Based on Rockett and Milke (2002), pp. 1-38 and 1-41, and Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. B-81.

Original illustration for Finite element analysis, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Rockett and Milke (2002), p. 1-38 (nodes and mesh, smaller spacing where gradients are greatest), p. 1-40 (elements and assembly), p. 1-41 (Figure 1-2.9, mesh of a protected steel column: redraw, do not copy); Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. B-81 (mesh where large temperature gradients occur)
  • Alt text: Quarter cross-section of an insulated steel column divided into small elements, with a finer mesh in the insulation near the heated surface.
