Summary
Phases of an explosion in a vented building: confined explosion, removal of the vent cover, established venting and maximum flame area. The first pressure peak occurs when the vent opens, the second when turbulence and the largest flame area drive the burning rate. Based on Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 15-5.
Original illustration for Explosion venting, level 4 Expert.
- Source basis: Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 15-5, Figure 15-1 after Harris (1983) (redraw, do not copy) and text (second peak from turbulence created by venting); Zalosh (2002), p. 3-415 (any of several peaks can be the maximum)
- Alt text: Four small sketches of a room during a vented explosion above a pressure curve with a first peak at vent opening and a higher second peak.
