Summary

Mean flame height divided by fire diameter as a function of the dimensionless heat release rate (Heskestad correlation). Based on Heskestad (2002), p. 2-3, and Joglar (2007), p. 3-3.

Original illustration for Dimensionless heat release rate, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Heskestad (2002), p. 2-3, Eq. 2; Joglar (2007), p. 3-3; Stroup et al. (2016), p. 7-3; Van Rossum (2027), §6.7 for the L = D boundary; worked example from Najafi et al. (2007), pp. 2-27–2-28. Heskestad's Figure 2-1.3 (p. 2-3, after McCaffrey) shows a similar compilation of measured data: redraw from the formula only, do not copy that figure.
  • Alt text: Log-log chart of normalised flame height rising with dimensionless heat release rate, with the worked example marked.
