Summary

Zones of a candle flame, a laminar diffusion flame: the inner fuel-rich zone, the luminous soot zone and the outer zone where oxygen arrives and the burnout is completed. Based on Iqbal and Salley (2004), pp. 3-8 to 3-9, Simmons (2002), p. 1-151, and Van Rossum (2027), §4.3.

Original vector illustration for Diffusion flame, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Iqbal and Salley (2004), pp. 3-8 to 3-9 (candle; three zones; 590 to 680 °C; incandescent carbon particles; invisible outer zone); Simmons (2002), p. 1-151 (fuel-rich yellow carbon zone, hot blue zone on the air side, maximum temperature on the air side); Van Rossum (2027), §4.3 (oxygen by diffusion; outer part hottest; blue and yellow-orange colours). Figure 3-3 of Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 3-9, may guide the shape: redraw, do not copy.
  • Alt text: Candle flame cross-section with a dark inner zone, a yellow luminous zone with soot, and a thin invisible outer zone where oxygen arrives.
