Summary

Detection on a design fire curve: the fire must be detected at the critical fire size so that all later actions finish before the design limit. Based on Schifiliti et al. (2002), pp. 4-2 to 4-3, and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2025b), p. 26.

Original illustration for Detector activation time, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Schifiliti et al. (2002), p. 4-2 (critical fire, design objective, fixed and variable delays, response lag, total system response time) and p. 4-3 (Figure 4-1.1 design fire curve, redraw, do not copy); Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2025b), p. 26 (RSET = td + tn + tpre + ttrav or tflow)
  • Alt text: Rising fire curve marking the critical fire, the delays after detection and the design limit, above a bar of the four parts of RSET.
