Summary

Structure of a detonation front: transverse shock waves meet at triple points, whose paths trace a fish-scale pattern of cells on a smoke foil; the cell width is the detonability length scale. Based on Zalosh (2002), p. 3-412.

Original illustration for Deflagration-to-detonation transition, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Zalosh (2002), p. 3-412, Figure 3-16.8 (redraw, do not copy) and text (curved shock segments moving transversely; smoke foil shows diamond or fish-scale pattern; cell width measured from the traces)
  • Alt text: Diamond-shaped cell pattern traced by moving triple points behind a curved detonation front, with the cell width marked.
