Summary

The 20-litre sphere used to measure the deflagration index: compressed air blows the dust from the dust chamber through a perforated dispersion ring, and an igniter at the centre ignites the cloud after a set delay. Based on Zalosh (2002), pp. 3-403 to 3-404.

Original illustration for Deflagration index, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Zalosh (2002), p. 3-403, Figure 3-16.1 (redraw, do not copy) and text on pp. 3-403 to 3-404 (dust chamber, dispersion ring, spark or pyrotechnic igniter at the centre, ignition after a time delay)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a 20-litre steel sphere with a dust chamber below, a dispersion ring inside and an igniter at the centre.
