Fse-critical-velocity-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 7 KB)

Summary

Airflow below the critical velocity (top): smoke flows back upstream under the ceiling. Airflow at or above the critical velocity (bottom): no smoke upstream of the fire. Based on Klote (2002), p. 4-279, and Ferreira and Strege (2005), p. 11.

Original illustration for Critical velocity, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Klote (2002), p. 4-279 (critical velocity to prevent smoke flowing upstream in a corridor); Ferreira and Strege (2005), p. 11 (insufficient velocity or hot smoke gives backflow at the upper part of an opening)
  • Alt text: Two corridor sections: weak airflow with smoke flowing back upstream under the ceiling; stronger airflow with all smoke kept downstream.
