Summary

Typical BLEVE sequence: a primary fire heats the vessel for several minutes until the shell bursts; the flashing liquid then causes a blast, fragments and, for flammable contents, a fireball. Based on Barry (2002), p. 5-184, and Iqbal and Salley (2004), pp. 5-15 and F-8.

Original vector illustration for BLEVE, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Barry (2002), p. 5-184 (primary fire, pressure rise, shell weakens, bursts, fireball, 8 to 15 minutes); Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 5-15 (blast waves, projectile, fireball) and p. F-8 (pressure wave, fragments thrown considerable distances); Beyler (2002a), p. 3-302 (flash evaporation, vapour cloud)
  • Alt text: Flowchart: fire exposure heats the vessel, pressure rises and the shell weakens, the vessel bursts, the liquid flashes, giving blast, fragments and a fireball.
