Summary

Heat balance at an adiabatic surface: absorbed radiation plus convection from the hot gas equals the emitted radiation, and no heat is conducted into the material. Based on McGrattan et al. (2026), pp. 77–79.

Original illustration for Adiabatic surface temperature, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: McGrattan et al. (2026), p. 77 (Equation 7.3: conduction into the solid equals convective plus radiative flux), p. 78 (Equations 7.4–7.6: adiabatic condition, absorbed and emitted radiation), p. 79 (convective flux h(Tg − Tw)); Van Rossum (2027), §5.3 and §5.4
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a surface with arrows for incoming radiation, emitted radiation and convection, and a crossed-out arrow for conduction into the material.
