Fse-adiabatic-flame-temperature-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 9 KB)

Summary

The adiabatic flame temperature assumes that all heat released by the reaction warms the products (left). A real flame loses heat by radiation and dissociation, so it stays cooler (right). Based on Simmons (2002), p. 1-145 and Drysdale (2002), p. 1-96.

Original illustration for Adiabatic flame temperature, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Simmons (2002), p. 1-145 (energy balance, heat losses neglected, dissociation above 1,800 K); Drysdale (2002), p. 1-96 (energy absorbed by products and diluents; three reasons why the result is approximate)
  • Alt text: Two energy-balance sketches: left, all reaction heat stays in the products; right, part of it leaves the flame as radiation.
