Fse-deflagration-index-v2.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 10 KB)

Summary

Pressure history of an explosion in a closed vessel. The deflagration index uses the steepest slope, read at the inflection point, not the final pressure. Based on Zalosh (2002), pp. 3-408 to 3-409.

Original illustration for Deflagration index, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Zalosh (2002), p. 3-409 (maximum rate measured at the inflection point of the P-versus-time curve; Eq. 8) and p. 3-408, Figure 3-16.4(a) (redraw, do not copy)
  • Alt text: S-shaped curve of pressure against time with a tangent at its steepest point and a dashed line at the maximum pressure.
