Fse-tunnel-fire-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 8 KB)

Summary

Airflow below the critical velocity (top): smoke flows back upstream against the air. Airflow at or above the critical velocity (bottom): the upstream side stays free of smoke. Based on Klote (2002), pp. 4-278–4-279.

Original vector illustration for Tunnel fire, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Klote (2002), p. 4-278 (Figure 4-12.6, smoke backflow against low air velocity; redraw, do not copy) and p. 4-279 (critical velocity to prevent smoke flowing upstream)
  • Alt text: Two longitudinal tunnel sections with a burning vehicle: weak airflow lets smoke flow back upstream; stronger airflow keeps all smoke downstream.
