Summary

Smouldering, glowing and flaming combustion after a firebrand lands on a fuel bed; airflow in the direction of the smoulder front can trigger the transition to flaming. Based on Kanury (2002a), p. 2-230, and Ohlemiller (2002), p. 2-208.

Original vector illustration for Firebrands, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Kanury (2002a), p. 2-230 (definitions of smouldering, glowing and flaming; piloted ignition); Ohlemiller (2002), p. 2-208 (transition to flaming with forced airflow 0.9 to 1.7 m/s in the direction of smoulder propagation)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a fuel bed with a landed brand: smouldering zone inside, glowing surface, and a flame above once air flows over the bed.
