Summary

Firebrands are lofted by the convective plume, carried by the wind and can ignite combustible material where they land. Based on Hamins, Maranghides, McGrattan, Ohlemiller, and Anleitner (2005), p. 30, and National Research Council of Canada et al. (2005), p. 2.6-12.

  • Source basis: Hamins, Maranghides, McGrattan, Ohlemiller, and Anleitner (2005), p. 30 (brands lofted by convective forces fall onto combustible materials); National Research Council of Canada et al. (2005), p. 2.6-12 (brand rising in the thermal plume carried in the wind; distance uncertain); Quintiere (2002b), p. 2-255 (spot fires)
  • Alt text: Side view: a burning building sends a plume upward; small burning brands rise in it, drift downwind and land on a roof and on vegetation.
