Summary

Routes of vertical fire spread on a facade: flames from an opening re-entering a higher floor (left) and fire spread over cladding and through the cavity behind it, interrupted by a cavity barrier (right). Based on Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2025b), pp. 48–49, and Ramachandran (2002c), p. 3-392.

Original vector illustration for Facade fire, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2025b), p. 48 (design fire sources: skip fire, plume from window; cavity barriers at each floor) and p. 49 (plumes re-entering at higher level; aprons and spandrels); Ramachandran (2002c), p. 3-392 (flame height compared with spandrel height); Van Rossum (2027), §4.11 (external flames after flashover)
  • Alt text: Section through three storeys: flames from a window rise past a spandrel to the window above; fire also runs up cladding and its cavity to a barrier.
