Summary

Lift shaft pressurisation: outdoor air keeps the shaft above the pressure of the floors, so smoke from the fire floor stays out. Based on Klote (2002), pp. 4-288–4-289, and Australian Building Codes Board (2020a), p. 127.

Original vector illustration for Firefighting lift, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Klote (2002), p. 4-288 (elevator smoke control, piston effect) and p. 4-289 (Example 5: 12.4 Pa, 6.9 Pa, 2.54 m/s; recall and fire service keys); Australian Building Codes Board (2020a), p. 127 (lift shaft pressurised with outdoor air)
  • Alt text: Section of a pressurised lift shaft: fan blows outdoor air in, air leaks out at each floor, smoke stays on the fire floor; a moving car.
