Summary

A spherical flame in a closed vessel: the flame burns into the unburned mixture at the burning velocity, while the expanding burned gas pushes the mixture outwards, so the flame front moves several times faster. Based on Zalosh (2002), pp. 3-407 to 3-408.

Original vector illustration for Deflagration, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Zalosh (2002), p. 3-407 (burning velocity relative to unburned gas; expanding spherical flame) and p. 3-408 (flame speed (Tb/T0)Su; most of the pressure rise when the flame is near the wall); Simmons (2002), p. 1-144 (definition of burning velocity)
  • Alt text: Circular vessel with a central ignition point, a spherical flame front, burned gas inside and arrows showing unburned gas pushed outwards.
