Fse-deflagration-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 7 KB)

Summary

A deflagration (top) moves below the speed of sound and the pressure rises almost evenly; a detonation (bottom) is led by a shock wave and the pressure jumps at the front. Based on Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 15-3, and Zalosh (2002), p. 3-410.

Original vector illustration for Deflagration, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 15-3 (speeds, shock in detonation) and p. 16-8 (uniform rise in deflagration); Zalosh (2002), p. 3-410 (uniform versus non-uniform pressure rise)
  • Alt text: Two tubes of gas mixture: top, a slow flame front with even pressure throughout; bottom, a fast front led by a shock with a sharp pressure jump.
