Summary

A liquefied gas vessel exposed to fire: the liquid cools the wetted shell, while the shell around the vapour space heats up and weakens. Based on Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 5-15.

Original vector illustration for BLEVE, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 5-15 (liquid as heat absorber; vapour-space surfaces at risk; metal above 538 °C; most BLEVEs at less than 1/2 to 1/3 full); p. 15-2 (external heating raises internal pressure)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a horizontal gas tank above a fire: the lower wall touches liquid and stays cooler, the upper wall touches vapour and overheats.
