Summary

A window in a wall on a 0.1 m grid (left) and a 0.5 m grid (right): the opening snaps to the nearest cell faces. Based on McGrattan et al. (2005), p. 28, and McGrattan et al. (2026), p. 6.

Original illustration for Mesh resolution, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: McGrattan et al. (2026), p. 6 (obstructions snap to the grid); McGrattan et al. (2005), p. 28 (10 cm grid: geometry within about 5 cm; 50 cm grid: a 20 cm shift of the window top changed the layer depth by the same amount and the upper layer temperature by about 100 °C)
  • Alt text: A wall with a window drawn on a fine and on a coarse grid; on the coarse grid the window edges jump to the nearest cell lines.
