Summary

Turbulent energy against inverse eddy size: LES computes the large eddies and models the small ones, RANS averages over all scales, DNS resolves all. Based on Cox and Kumar (2002), p. 3-196.

Original illustration for Large eddy simulation, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Cox and Kumar (2002), p. 3-196, Figure 3-8.1 (schematic turbulent energy spectrum: redraw, do not copy); McGrattan et al. (2026), pp. 27–28 (DNS below the Kolmogorov scale)
  • Alt text: Curve of turbulent energy against inverse eddy size, with bars showing what RANS, LES and DNS compute and model.
