Fse-balcony-spill-plume-v2.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 8 KB)

Summary

Plume width at the balcony edge: without barriers the smoke spreads sideways (equivalent width L = w + b); vertical barriers under the balcony limit the spill width. Based on Milke (2002b), pp. 4-301 to 4-302.

Original illustration for Balcony spill plume, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Milke (2002b), p. 4-301 (barriers restrict the dispersion of the horizontal smoke flow under the balcony; equivalent width from Morgan and Marshall's visual observations) and p. 4-302 (equation 30, L = w + b)
  • Alt text: Two plan views of a shop opening and balcony: without barriers the smoke fans out to a wide spill; with barriers the spill keeps the opening width.
