Summary

Formation of a balcony spill plume: smoke from a shop fire flows under the walkway, spills at its edge and rises into the atrium, where it feeds the smoke layer. Based on Milke (2002b), pp. 4-301 and 4-308, and Ferreira and Strege (2005), p. 7.

Original illustration for Balcony spill plume, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Milke (2002b), p. 4-301 (definition; experiments with smoke from a store through an opening, under a walkway, turning and rising at its edge) and p. 4-308 (meaning of Hb, b, w, L, z); Ferreira and Strege (2005), p. 7 (exhaust method, upper part of the space as smoke reservoir; Figure 2-1, redraw, do not copy)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a shop next to an atrium: smoke leaves the shop, flows under a walkway and rises from its edge into the atrium below an exhausted smoke layer.
