Summary

A fan supplies outside air to the stair. The higher pressure in the stair drives air out through the gaps around the closed doors, which keeps smoke on the fire floor out of the stair. Based on Klote (2002), pp. 4-278 and 4-286.

Original vector illustration for Stair pressurisation, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Klote (2002), p. 4-278 (pressure difference across a barrier with a door, high-pressure side is the escape route), p. 4-286 (single injection at the top of the stair, positive pressure across the closed door on the fire floor)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a five-storey building with a pressurised stair; air leaks out of the stair at each closed door and keeps smoke on the fire floor out.
