Summary

The equivalent time is the time of standard fire exposure at which a protected steel member reaches the same maximum temperature as in the real fire. Based on Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2013), p. 79.

Original illustration for Time equivalence, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (2013), p. 79 (same maximum temperature of a protected steel member, burnout); National Research Council of Canada et al. (2005), p. 2.6-3 (same thermal impact as complete burnout, correlation from protected steel beams)
  • Alt text: Schematic chart: steel temperature under a real fire peaks; under the standard fire it reaches the same value at the equivalent time.
