Fse-tensile-membrane-action-v3.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 7 KB)

Summary

Sagging floors pull inward on the exterior columns and no longer brace them, so the wall bows inward. Based on Gross and McAllister (2005), p. 296, and Zarghamee, Kitane, et al. (2005), p. 310.

Original illustration for Tensile membrane action, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Gross and McAllister (2005), p. 296 (sagging, pull-in forces at column connections, inward bowing; floor in tension does not restrain the wall), p. 89; Zarghamee, Kitane, et al. (2005), p. 310 (floors with large sag did not restrain columns from buckling)
  • Alt text: Section through a tall building edge: several heated floors sag between core and exterior wall and pull the wall columns inward into a bow.
