Fse-restrained-thermal-expansion-v5.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 8 KB)

Summary

A concrete slab heated from below and restrained by the surrounding cooler slab: the thermal thrust acts near the bottom and works like prestressing. Based on Fleischmann and Buchanan (2002), pp. 4-247 to 4-249.

Original illustration for Restrained thermal expansion, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Fleischmann and Buchanan (2002), p. 4-247 (thermal thrust from surrounding cooler slab), p. 4-248 (prestressing analogy, line of action below compression resultant, near the bottom), p. 4-249 (Table 4-10.1: 25, 32 and 38 mm at 2, 3 and 4 h)
  • Alt text: Section of a concrete slab heated from below, restrained at both ends, with a thrust force acting near the bottom face and a compression zone at the top.
