Fse-restrained-thermal-expansion-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 9 KB)

Summary

The same heated beam with free, partly restrained and fully restrained ends: restraint turns elongation into force. Based on National Institute of Standards and Technology (2008), p. 21, and Gross and McAllister (2005), p. 40.

Original illustration for Restrained thermal expansion, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: National Institute of Standards and Technology (2008), p. 21 (resisted expansion creates forces, buckling, connection failure); Milke (2002a), p. 4-210 (degree of restraint depends on geometry, connections, framing); Gross and McAllister (2005), p. 40 (real assemblies lie between restrained and unrestrained)
  • Alt text: One heated beam three times: free and longer, held by a spring with less extension and a force, held by walls with no extension and a large force.
