Summary

AFFF on a pool fire: the foam blanket and the aqueous film draining from it seal the fuel surface, while radiant heat and drainage consume the blanket. Based on Scheffey (2002), pp. 4-88 to 4-91.

Original vector illustration for Aqueous film-forming foam, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Scheffey (2002), p. 4-88 (floating foam, air-excluding layer halts vaporisation), p. 4-89 (drained solution forms stable film; extinguishment as cessation of vaporisation), pp. 4-90 to 4-91 (evaporation, drainage; Figure 4-4.2, redraw, do not copy)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a fuel pool: left part covered by a foam blanket over a thin aqueous film, right part still burning with flames above.
