Summary

A travelling car fire passes from one vehicle to the next through heat radiation (left); a sprinkler or water mist system can keep the fire localised to a few cars (right). Based on Van der Graaf et al. (2021/2023), pp. 29 and 36.

Original illustration for Travelling fire, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Van der Graaf et al. (2021/2023), p. 29 (travelling car fires; prolonged heat radiation between vehicles) and p. 36 (sprinkler or water mist system can contain the fire to a small number of cars)
  • Alt text: Two plans of a row of parked cars: without sprinklers the fire passes from car to car; with sprinklers only one car burns.
