Summary

A fire in a sealed room (left), in a room that only leaks (centre) and in a room with an open door (right). Based on Emmons (2002), pp. 2-32 and 2-34, and Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 14-1.

Original illustration for Fire-induced pressure, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Emmons (2002), p. 2-32 (expansion drives gas out; hermetically sealed room would burst), p. 2-34 (buoyant outflow at the top and inflow at the bottom once the fire grows), p. 2-38 (neutral axis somewhat above the hot-cold interface in the room); Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 14-1 (pressure rise from expansion in closed or slightly leaky rooms drives flow out and prevents inflow; hydrostatic differences negligible)
  • Alt text: Three cross-sections of the same room with a fire: sealed with outward pressure arrows, leaking smoke through door gaps, and with an open door.
