Fse-virtual-origin-v1.svg (SVG file, nominally 900 × 600 pixels, file size: 8 KB)

Summary

The virtual origin is the point from which the plume above the flames appears to originate: below the fuel surface for a wide, low fire (left) and above it for a tall, intense fire (right). Based on Heskestad (2002), pp. 2-6 and 2-11.

Original illustration for Virtual origin, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Heskestad (2002), p. 2-6 (equivalent point source, z replaced by z − z0, negative z0 below the fire source) and p. 2-9 (point source from which the plume above the flames appears to originate) and p. 2-11 (negative z0 for low heat release and large diameters, positive for high heat release); Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 9-5 (Figure 9-3, redraw, do not copy)
  • Alt text: Two fire plumes: dashed plume edges extended downwards meet at a point below the fuel of a wide fire and above the fuel of a tall fire.
