Summary

Burning of a plastic is a feedback loop: heat from the flame decomposes the solid into combustible gases, which burn and heat the surface again. Based on Beyler and Hirschler (2002), p. 1-110, and Van Rossum (2027), §3.1.

Original vector illustration for Plastics in fire, level 2 Intermediate.

  • Source basis: Beyler and Hirschler (2002), p. 1-110 (Figure 1-7.1, feedback loop; redraw, do not copy), p. 1-123 (char); Van Rossum (2027), §3.1 (pyrolysis needs no oxygen)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a plastic slab with a flame above; arrows show heat going down, gases rising and burning, and heat returning.
