Summary

Ceiling jet beneath an unconfined ceiling above a steady fire, with the quantities used in the Alpert correlations. Based on Alpert (2002), pp. 2-18 to 2-19, and Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 10-9.

Original illustration for Alpert correlations, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Alpert (2002), p. 2-18 (ceiling jet definition, entrainment at the lower boundary; Figure 2-2.1 on p. 2-18, redraw, do not copy) and p. 2-19 (turning region boundary at r/H = 0.18, H measured above the burning fuel); Iqbal and Salley (2004), p. 10-9 (jet depth 5 to 12% of H, maximum at about 1% of H) and Figure 10-3 on p. 10-11 (redraw, do not copy)
  • Alt text: Cross-section of a fire plume rising to a flat ceiling and spreading sideways as a thin ceiling jet past a sprinkler and a heat detector.
