Summary

Smouldering in the crevice between the seat and back cushions of a chair. Extra air, a larger smouldering zone and a concave front raise the temperature and the gas production until the gases can ignite. Based on Ohlemiller (2002), pp. 2-207 and 2-208.

Original illustration for Smouldering-to-flaming transition, level 4 Expert.

  • Source basis: Ohlemiller (2002), p. 2-207 (chimney-like effect in the crevice between horizontal and vertical cushions, from mock-up studies) and p. 2-208 (requirements for transition; factors: enhanced oxygen supply, increase in scale, concave smoulder front; secondary char oxidation fronts)
  • Alt text: Side section of an armchair seat and back cushion with a glowing smoulder zone in the crevice, air flowing in and gases rising.
